Enable PSP Remote Play for Just About any PS3 Game

Check this out — a cool little trick that essentially enables PSP Remote Play for just about any PS3 game. Of course your PS3 must be hacked in order to modify the game’s PARAM.SFO. There have been a few reports where some games don’t work, so really it’s trial and error. Nonetheless — awesome stuff!
I haven’t tried Open Remote Play with this yet, but maybe it’ll work too. PS3 gaming on your PC — imagine that.

PS3 Firmware 3.50 Released

You know the drill… If you want hacks & homebrew, do not update. If you want 3D Blu-ray support and a couple other useless new features, then go nuts, update. If you have two or more PS3′s, then all the power to you. Cheers!

SNES9X – Super Nintendo Emulator – Ported to the PS3

Developer eiz has ported SNES9X — a Super Nintendo Emulator — to the PS3. It’s a very early port so don’t expect too much. For example (from the README):
  • Lots of snes9x features are not supported yet. No save states, for example. Most of these are really simple to implement.
  • Sound code is rubbish. It more or less works, but you’ll probably hear the occasional skip.
  • Performance isn’t great.
  • UI. Or rather, there isn’t one.
Copy your SNES ROMS to the root directory of your USB device, and then start Snes9x with the device attached to your PS3. Note: you’ll need to plug the device into the USB port nearest the eject & power button, the 1st port from the right, otherwise Snes9x will not find any roms. That’ll probably change in future versions.
After playing a few roms I gotta say, performance is pretty damn good. Props, eiz. Nice work.
Update: The download has been updated with a newly compiled version fresh from eiz’s github repository. This version allows you to select a rom directory, instead of defaulting to dev_usb000.

Play PSP Games on your PS3!

Soon. Right now it’s just video proof from GameSuper — apparently the baddest and most hardest Russian hacker around. Strapped with a camera to his head, or so it would seem, GameSuper excitingly demonstrates GTA Chinatown Wars (PSP game) on his hacked PS3.
The project is said to come in 2 parts: 1) a PC tool, which will convert any PSP ISO to a compatible PS3 format; and 2) a homebrew app (in a dot pkg) that must be launched only once in order to make the necessary changes that enable PSP gaming. Expect a beta release sometime soon, unless of course, GameSuper isn’t so super after all.
Update: As this develops it would seem GameSuper is in fact not the baddest or hardest hacker around. Several people (see comments) have debunked his claim to fame. So unless a release happens you can consider this a fake. Sorry folks.

PS3 Custom Firmware Loader – USB Firm Loader v0.2 Released

Whether you consider it the first, second or third step — it’s a step in the direction of PS3 custom firmware: JaicraB’s USB Firm Loader. Load [customized] PS3 firmware files off a USB stick in a few simple steps:
  1. Download PS3 FTP Server. Install it. Connect.
  2. Download and copy the entire “dev_flash” folder to your USB mass storage devices’ root directory.
  3. Copy JaiC_USB_FIRM_LOADER.pkg to the root too.
  4. Install USB Firm Loader.
  5. Now run USB Firm Loader with the USB mass storage device attached; it should return you to the XMB with the firmware loaded off the USB stick.

This’ll be used for loading modified RCOs, plugins / modules, etc. USB Firm Loader v0.2 is an early release, so bugs are likely to exist. You will also need PSGroove with peek & poke sys-calls. Our compiled binaries for select AVR USB boards should work.

Trophy Hacks – How to Platinum Any PS3 Game

You knew it was going to happen: Trophy Hacks! The only caveat: You can’t sync with PSN, which makes it a cool hack, for now (no online cheating). Vssiky over at nextgenupdate.com has written a detailed tutorial on how to hex edit your way to the top (of the offline world).
Check it out:
If/when you can sync with PSN, by whatever means, it’ll likely put you at risk of getting banned. Play honest. Don’t be a dick.

Inside the trophy collection section on your XMB, there are games represented by thier TROPUSR.DAT(s) respectively, where you can view the % of a game, what have you unlocked, etc. TROPUSR.DAT stores all of that information. Basically to get everything unlocked on a game, you will need to edit that game’s TROPUSR.DAT.
Manually editting TROPUSR.DAT can take a while to get used to. But after learning where and which byte to change, you will be able to platinum a game in no time.
You’ll need the following:
Then follow this tutorial. Nice work, Vssiky.

PSP-Mediated JailBreak Impractical

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it would seem the PSP port of PS JailBreak / PSGroove / PSFreedom, whatever you want to call it, isn’t happening anytime soon. That is unless someone else who we don’t know is hacking away at it, which is possible. Don’t get me wrong — the PSP port is not impossible, so to speak — it’s just not feasible, says the maintainer of this project page.
Discontinued. Everything indicates that this port cannot be made, even if it could, it would take too long to develop something, as well as Hermes says, leave the project unfeasible, not impossible.
Bummer. Like Mystic_Knights once said on Twitter — you can’t fight fire with fire. The good news: We’ll have more jailbreak sticks and USB boards to giveaway soon. Check back.

PSN Demo Installer & Demo Manager Released – Install PSN Content on your Hacked PS3!

But that’s all right because those shady cats over at ps3news have a whole system dedicated to PSN links. Click here and download a demo or two.
Now what? Download PSN Demo Installer and follow the instructions in Readme.txt. The end result being this: Install & play PSN demos on your hacked PS3 at 3.41. Pretty cool, huh? You can thank stadicon for the Windows app.

Reverse Engineering the PS JailBreak Payload

Sure, the exploit works, we know that. We even know how the exploit is triggered and the payload delivered. But do you really know how and why it works? Mathieulh tweets a cool breakdown detailing what’s understood up to this point. Consider it a “behind-the-scenes” look at the actual payload — the code that makes it all possible. What does that mean for you, right now? Not much. But it’s a cool read if the low-level stuff interests you.

Hack with Dashhacks: PS3 Break Giveaway

In light of our new found relationship with mygamingmart.com we’re going to give away one of these bad boys:
PS3 Break
It’s been tested; I can personally confirm PS3 Break works. The device is upgradable too, which means whenever an update happens you can make use of it. For example, lets say the ability to hack an earlier firmware version, or dare I say a later version is made possible. Well if the hack stems from the same USB trickery then you could update this stick to do just that.
Anyway, one lucky reader is going to get that same PS3 Break pictured above, courtesy of mygamingmart.com.
Now I understand our demographic is mostly male, so to all the guys out there wanting to hack their PS3, you better hope you know some hotties too. I’m talking Ice-T’s Coco hot. If you’re a girl reading this and looking to hack her PS3, first let me apologize for sounding sexist, but really, it’s even easier for you. That said, all you gottat do is this: Take a picture of whoever — your girlfriend, your mom, yourself (if you’re female) — sporting the Dashhacks logo or ps3-hacks.com in some fashion and twitpic that pic to @dashhacks on Twitter. Our one & only female Dashhacks correspondent will be picking the winner. Good luck.

PSGroove Forked w/ Multiple Payloads

AerialX, a fellow Canuck, has forked the PSGroove code adding different payloads to the mix.
For example —
Default Payload:
The default payload performs the basic PSGroove exploit; it allows you to install and run unsigned packages.
Apploader Payload:
This payload makes use of the /app_home/PS3_GAME menu item. You may place an application on a USB drive under the PS3_GAME folder to run it without installing a package.
So if you have LV2 Memory Dumper or PS3 FTP Server, you could do something like this: Get a USB stick, create a directory called PS3_GAME and under that create a sub-directory, LV2Dump or PS3FTP. Copy all the files from whatever pkg to the respective sub-directory under PS3_GAME, plug the USB stick into your PS3, and launch the app directly from the XMB.
But — simply extracting a PS3 pkg with a tool such as this won’t work. The EBOOT.BIN must be modified in order for the app to boot properly. I’m sure the tools to make that happen will follow sooner or later.

Play PS3 Backups from a DVD-R / BD-R

Jamal94 knows, and if you don’t, he’s gonna tell you: you can burn PS3 backups to a DVD-R or BD-R (dual-layer media doesn’t work) should the game fit. But now you’re probably wondering, why would I want to do that, Jamal? I got a 500+ GB drive for backing up games. Well take a look here and you’ll notice more than a few games have issues. Reports are coming in that games with problems *may* see improved compatibility when playing from an optical disc. It’s simple really:
  1. Backup your [legitimately owned] game to the HDD using Backup Manager.
  2. If you’ve backed up to an external FAT32 formatted drive:
    • Connect the drive to your PC and browse to X:\GAMEZ\
  3. If you’ve backed up to the internal HDD:
    • Connect to your PS3 with PS3 FTP Server
    • Browse to /dev_hdd0/game/LAUN12345/GAMEZ/
  4. You should see 2 directories: PS3_GAME & PS3_UPDATE — and 1 file: PS3_DISC.sfb
  5. Burn those 2 directories and 1 file to a single layer DVD-R or BD-R.
  6. Delete the game off your HDD.
  7. JailBreak your PS3, insert the disc, load Backup Manager and load your game.
  8. Store your original game disc for safekeeping.

LV2 Memory Dumper – LV2Dump v0.7a – Released

This’ll perhaps lead to something bigger and badder… From blackb0x comes a LV2 Memory Dumper app that’ll do just that — dump the PS3 LV2 memory to a file that can later be analyzed by all the hackers and aspiring jailbirds out there. It goes something like this: Install, dump, analyze, discover, exploit, email hacks at ps3-hacks with a dot com and crack a cold one. In other words, developers can further explore the inner-workings of the PS3, which could possibly lead to other exploits. Maybe.
This application will dump all accessible LV2 memory on a jailbroken retail PS3.
To run this app, place lv2dump_07a.pkg on a usb memory stick. Install the pkg. Then run LV2Dump from the XMB. It should run for approximately 20-30 seconds, then it will exit back to the XMB. There will now be a file named LV2.BIN in the folder /dev_hdd0/game/
You can access your dump by copying the file out with your own code, or the FTP application.
Before attempting another dump, delete the LV2.BIN that is in /dev_hdd0/game/ as the next dump will append to the file if it exists.
The dump is right around 8MB – which will let you take a look at the PS3′s kernel.
Expect more tools from us in the future for the PS3.

Thanks for the heads up, BLuFeNiX.

PSGroove Can Be Ported To All (Earlier) PS3 Firmware Versions

While I was on the move, RichDevX tweeted the following: “awesome! I successfully executed lv2 privileged code on a ps3 debugging station.”
Which RichDevX later put into layman’s terms: “…it means that I’m able to port psgroove to all PS3 FW versions (debug/retail (pre 3.42)).”
That’s pretty sweet — especially if you’re still at firmware 3.15 for OtherOS reasons.
