Xbox360 S Diagram for NandPro

Just as a note: MODFREAKz released the diagram to read/write the NAND of the Xbox360 S,  with NandPro via USB SPI.
However; This is currently not useful for end-users, as all Xbox360 Slim consoles come with new & locked CB, so the JTAG/SMC hack is not possible on these consoles. But this is of course useful for new research and who knows what the future will bring.

Dash Launch v2.00

cOz released a new version of Dash Launch for homebrew 360s:
* At time of this writing, this is ONLY compatible with freeBOOT 9199 read info_launch.ini for info on options and setting launch parameters.* This a core rewrite, major changes were done to the paths used in the ini file, the installer can update these for you if you have the old ini files accessible at the time of install. See the inlcuded sample ini files.
* The installer is now much more robust, and can even flash the appropriate patches to your console for you, all that is required is that you have installed freeboot 9199
Overview:
* It will launch a XeX or CON file from the path you specified in launch.ini as long as it’s valid
* Depending on the button you hold when the xbox is trying to load the NXE, it will divert to the xex/con tied to that button or return to default as defined in launch.ini
* Depending which button is held when closing miniblade in NXE (use Y button to close, release then hold a QL button) it will quick launch a CON or XEX from your ini file
* allows one to patch kernel/xam at bootup with a freeBOOT patch style bin file from usb or hdd (in that order) must be in root of the device and be named “kxam.patch” and be no larger than 0×4000 bytes. Again, kxam.patch binary format is the same as a compiled freeboot patch bin, but uses real virtual addresses rather than offsets – see 1.0 release for a windows patch builder
* with the included patch set, launch.xex acts as a helper to detect when xbox1 emulator loads, allowing memory unlock patch and xbox1 emulator to function together
What’s new/fixed (since v1.0):
- plugins now use logical paths just like quick launch buttons
- option subvert Y to exit miniblade while in NXE to load button/default (fixed)
- added common (9199) content and ping limit patches as options
- mostly runs in system threads, startup completes while bootanim runs
- completely subverted dash.xex, no more CD issues or NXE split seconds
- removed insistance on 0/1/2 paths and reliance on CaPs to detect
- return to NXE via miniblade for system settings and others works w/o using RB
- added big block NAND mu as possible device
- optionally subvert Y to exit miniblade while in NXE to load button/default
- added xell loader to patch set and included a xex to load xell
- removed reboot on fatal error from patches
- included reboot/shutdown on fatal error as settings
- installer onscreen output cleaned up, now shuts down console at end of install
- added ini file updater to installer- added patch updater to installer

New Xbox 360 Controller May Be About Patents?

Ever wonder why Sony and Microsoft don’t have the ‘traditional’ D-pads on their consoles? Microsoft has (had) the infamous disc and Sony has just the four buttons arranged like a D-Pad. Nintendo actually has the traditional cross-shaped D-Pad patented. (See US Patent 4,687,200). That’s why Nintendo products use it and others don’t.

So, everybody hates the “disc” D-Pad that the Xbox 360 controller uses. And video game hardware is such a low-margin segment of the industry to begin with, so licensing the patent from Nintendo is out of the question. So they come up with this brilliant rotating disc thing that lets you use a “traditional” D-Pad without infringing on the Nintendo patent. Major Nelson confirmed in his online YouTube video that Microsoft has this “hybrid” D-Pad patented, so don’t expect others to use it.

Bungie to Reset Halo Reach Credits and Gears at Launch

Credits earned by gamers before Halo: Reach’s official launch will be removed, Bungie has warned.
Bungie will reset Credits earned and any gear bought ahead of the Xbox 360 exclusive’s 14th September launch.

“Some of you are playing Halo: Reach a little bit early,” communications man Eric Osborne wrote in Bungie’s forum.
“It happens. With millions of copies out of manufacturing quickly making their way into the massive global retail chain, it’s not terribly uncommon for a few discs to ‘accidentally’ slip into a few lucky customers’ hands. Que sera.”

Unauthorized Halo Reach Play Will Result in BAN: “We have ways of knowing”

Of course they do!

Stephen Toulouse, Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox LIVE, posted some tweets about the early online Halo Reach leaks:

I’ve been asked about unauthorized pre-release play on Halo: Reach. Let me address that.

As with all unauthorized play on Xbox LIVE, anyone playing any unauthorized title runs the risk of account permaban and console.
Remember, legit store bought copy runs no risk of ban. Key word: UNAUTHORIZED. We have ways of knowing.

How can they know? Just like they do any other time…

Put Your Old Xbox 360 HDD Into Your Slim!

Here’s a video posted on Youtube by SiddGoneWild that shows the old HDDs from the Original Xbox 360 will work just fine on the new Xbox 360 S. You’ll have to strip the HDD from the original HDD-case and slid it into the 360 S HDD-slot. Not ideal, as the Xbox 360 S proprietary slot is much larger than the 2.5″ SATA HDD, but it will fit in (SATA data/power ports match the standard) without needing any 3rd party hardware addons or so. I’d just suggest to add some rubber tabs on the sides or so to prevent the HDD from moving too much.

We are to assume laptop/PC HDDs modded with HDDHackr will work just fine in the Xbox 360 S as well (and save you a small fortune). If anyone tried this already, let us all know!

The UNIFIED GPU in the new Xbox 360 S

The company’s engineers created a chip that combined the machine’s microprocessor and its graphics chip on a single piece of silicon. In the past, different versions of the console have all used two separate chips for those tasks. The code name for the project was Vejle, named after a city in Denmark (It’s not Valhalla, as we all thought?).

The new 3.2-gigahertz, three-core microprocessor, and 500-megahertz graphics chip design is on one chip. In order to create this, Microsoft and IBM engineers had to work together to build the necessary connectivity within the chip to route electrical signals in and out of the chip. IBM had to get rid of its main communications channel between the chips, (FSB), and build a substitute for it.

Xbox 360 S GPU CPU Vejle Valhalla

The GPU side is packaged with a separate 10-megabyte embedded memory chip. So the two chips are packaged in a single module. The combined chip uses 60 percent less power than the original 2005 pair of chips, and it uses 50 percent less space. Robert Drehmel, senior technical engineer at IBM, said that one of the big challenges was to marry two chips that were built by different companies, designed by different engineering teams, and created with different chip design tools. IBM had to learn more about the unfamiliar ATI design, design specific tools to adapt it, and then recreate an overall design that did the same thin.

Halo: Reach snagged early from Microsoft’s servers

Continuing in the sad tradition of Halo 2 and 3 before it, Halo: Reach has apparently been leaked. Modders at Game-Tut.com found a way to trick Microsoft’s servers, which are currently hosting the full game download. The download is intended for select media and only accessible with a code — well, until Game-Tut apparently cracked that security measure. The site has yet to openly leak the files to the general public. It appears that the game is leaking other places as well. A Microsoft spokesperson told Joystiq, “We are aware of claims being made regarding a security exploit related to Halo: Reach and are aggressively investigating the matter. We have no further details to share at this time.”

XM360 v1.8d

Node21 (Team XeDev) now released XM360 v1.8d to the public, a tool running on homebrew 360s that will allow to organize, scan and unlock XBLA and DLC content.

What’s new/fixed (since v1.7):
* Fixed fact that you couldn’t sort by ratings or raters in the collection manager (v1.8)
* Fixed new scraper (1.7b) getting ratings wrong. I made a change to the file format that breaks compatibility with old xbla_titles.csv, so make sure you are not using an old version of the file. (v1.8)
* Fixed initial scan crashing the 360 if there was no existing content.bin file. (v1.8)
* xm360_server is now aware of the last time xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv were generated. Every 360 that connects to xm360_server will *automatically* update the xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv on that 360. Furthermore, you can regenerate, or replace those files without stopping xm360_server from running. So, I leave the server running all the time, 24/7. I have scheduled a /X and a /D every night at midnight as well. It’s all invisible without any hands on maintenance. Basically, this feature means you shouldn’t ever have to worry about moving these files to your 360 anymore. On the server, these files should be in the same place as content.bin. (v1.8)
* Also, if you put an xm360.xex in that same directory, xm360 will *also* update itself if the version there is newer than the version that is running. It will automatically restart if this happens. This is a moot feature though, unfortunately. (v1.8)
* A request was made to include the DLC filename for missing DLC in the DLC_report.txt (v1.8b)
* A suggestion from a donater: The first scene now has the ability to seperate GOD from XBLA (use RB to toggle) (v1.8c)
* The server will now wait for you to hit enter after scraping XBLA or DLC (v1.8c)
* The server has a new command line option (/Q) to tell it *not* to wait for enter after scraping. Use this if you automatically scrape every night via a scheduled task, or something like that. (v1.8c)
* After “ATHiEST” leaked version 1.7b, I stopped work on xm360, except to support people who had donated. I’m releasing 1.8d to get everyone out there caught up to what has changed since then. Any future work on XM360 will once again go to people who donated first. (v1.8d)
* Due to a request, after unlocking XBLA, you no longer have to do a full re-scan for content (v1.8d)
* FTP is much faster thanks to the FSD team teaching me to assign threads to a CPU, go DONATE TO FSD PLEASE! (v1.8d)
* Because xm360_server became the only way to update the database, and it doesn’t work on linux. I’ve gone back to including the perl scrapers (but they are still not as good as xm360_server) (v1.8d)

Datel Wildfire2: Unlicensed Wireless Xbox360 Controller without Dongle

Datel managed to make the first unlicensed wireless controller for the Xbox360, that doesn’t require a USB transceiver, and will just sync directly with the Xbox360 wireless system itself. Keep in mind the wireless technology MS uses for controllers isn’t any industry standard like Bluetooth (wrong) or so, but a proprietary Xbox360 technology – created so only MS and its official licensed partners (like Madcatz etc – who have to pay licensing fees) could sell wireless controllers. The Redmond team is probably not gonna like it, but Datel and MS are already strangled into several lawsuits (incl. one about Datel’s Wildfire1 wired 360 controller).

The WildFire2 controller for Xbox 360 faithfully recreates all of the functionality of the original Xbox 360 controller, including vibration feedback and full analogue input.
In addition, the WildFire2 controller enhances your gaming with a programmable Turbo Rapid Fire function and new ergonomic design

Features:
* Direct Sync with Xbox 360
* No cord or dongles required
* Programmable Turbo Rapid Fire
* Integrated headset port for Xbox Live play
* Dual rumble motors
* Truly ergonomic shape fits perfectly in your hands
* Fully compatible with Xbox 360
* Blue glowing grips showing when Turbo Rapid Fire is enabled
* Compatibility Warranty
* Requires 2 x AA batteries (not included)

The wireless technology is still on the 2.4Ghz range, just as Bluetooth is, same with the PS3 & Wii controllers; they just use different communications & security (sync) protocols. The FCC only allows certain frequencies (2.4-2.5Ghz unlicensed spectrum) for these wireless devices. The specs say the controller works within 30-feet (10 meters) of the 360, same as Bluetooth Class II specs.

So, it would NOT be hard for someone to make a 3rd party controller, they just need to know what the security is between the two devices that takes place when you use the SYNC buttons. They are no different than a Bluetooth KB or MOUSE that only has the SYNC buttons to register the devices with the USB dongle.

In reality, the Wii, XB360, and PS3 all use Bluetooth for their wireless controllers, they are just using non standard protocols for them. The PS3 controller does not have a SYNC button, it is done through the USB connection (registered).
