XM360 v1.8d
Node21 (Team XeDev) now released XM360 v1.8d to the public, a tool running on homebrew 360s that will allow to organize, scan and unlock XBLA and DLC content.
What’s new/fixed (since v1.7):
* Fixed fact that you couldn’t sort by ratings or raters in the collection manager (v1.8)
* Fixed new scraper (1.7b) getting ratings wrong. I made a change to the file format that breaks compatibility with old xbla_titles.csv, so make sure you are not using an old version of the file. (v1.8)
* Fixed initial scan crashing the 360 if there was no existing content.bin file. (v1.8)
* xm360_server is now aware of the last time xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv were generated. Every 360 that connects to xm360_server will *automatically* update the xbla_titles.csv and dlc_titles.csv on that 360. Furthermore, you can regenerate, or replace those files without stopping xm360_server from running. So, I leave the server running all the time, 24/7. I have scheduled a /X and a /D every night at midnight as well. It’s all invisible without any hands on maintenance. Basically, this feature means you shouldn’t ever have to worry about moving these files to your 360 anymore. On the server, these files should be in the same place as content.bin. (v1.8)
* Also, if you put an xm360.xex in that same directory, xm360 will *also* update itself if the version there is newer than the version that is running. It will automatically restart if this happens. This is a moot feature though, unfortunately. (v1.8)
* A request was made to include the DLC filename for missing DLC in the DLC_report.txt (v1.8b)
* A suggestion from a donater: The first scene now has the ability to seperate GOD from XBLA (use RB to toggle) (v1.8c)
* The server will now wait for you to hit enter after scraping XBLA or DLC (v1.8c)
* The server has a new command line option (/Q) to tell it *not* to wait for enter after scraping. Use this if you automatically scrape every night via a scheduled task, or something like that. (v1.8c)
* After “ATHiEST” leaked version 1.7b, I stopped work on xm360, except to support people who had donated. I’m releasing 1.8d to get everyone out there caught up to what has changed since then. Any future work on XM360 will once again go to people who donated first. (v1.8d)
* Due to a request, after unlocking XBLA, you no longer have to do a full re-scan for content (v1.8d)
* FTP is much faster thanks to the FSD team teaching me to assign threads to a CPU, go DONATE TO FSD PLEASE! (v1.8d)
* Because xm360_server became the only way to update the database, and it doesn’t work on linux. I’ve gone back to including the perl scrapers (but they are still not as good as xm360_server) (v1.8d)

Datel Wildfire2: Unlicensed Wireless Xbox360 Controller without Dongle
Datel managed to make the first unlicensed wireless controller for the Xbox360, that doesn’t require a USB transceiver, and will just sync directly with the Xbox360 wireless system itself. Keep in mind the wireless technology MS uses for controllers isn’t any industry standard like Bluetooth (wrong) or so, but a proprietary Xbox360 technology – created so only MS and its official licensed partners (like Madcatz etc – who have to pay licensing fees) could sell wireless controllers. The Redmond team is probably not gonna like it, but Datel and MS are already strangled into several lawsuits (incl. one about Datel’s Wildfire1 wired 360 controller).

The wireless technology is still on the 2.4Ghz range, just as Bluetooth is, same with the PS3 & Wii controllers; they just use different communications & security (sync) protocols. The FCC only allows certain frequencies (2.4-2.5Ghz unlicensed spectrum) for these wireless devices. The specs say the controller works within 30-feet (10 meters) of the 360, same as Bluetooth Class II specs.
So, it would NOT be hard for someone to make a 3rd party controller, they just need to know what the security is between the two devices that takes place when you use the SYNC buttons. They are no different than a Bluetooth KB or MOUSE that only has the SYNC buttons to register the devices with the USB dongle.
In reality, the Wii, XB360, and PS3 all use Bluetooth for their wireless controllers, they are just using non standard protocols for them. The PS3 controller does not have a SYNC button, it is done through the USB connection (registered).

Dstruktiv released the source code of NXE2GOD, an application for homebrew 360s that will converts NXE installed games to Games on Demand.

Sorry for the delay in updates, I have been playing Star Trek on-line all weekend; not impressed, but anyway:
TingedAce released a new version of XNand Healer GUI – an app that started off as an uncrippling tool but now morphed into a general purpose NAND dumping tool that should really aid the first part of the JTAG’ing process.

FreeStyle Dash v2.0 Alpha Update
To ensure our auto-updater works, and to fix some of the bugs found in FSD2.0 alpha, we’ve put a new version online.To get it, turn on the updater notification in the settings screen.
For users without a network connection, we will release this update via the website in 5 days or so.
EDIT: update is always called default.xex, rename it to whatever you named your xex if you dont have rev 1021 in about screen.

Shops To Check 2nd Hand Xbox360 with Halo3 DVD+R DL?
Took them log enough, but I know shops that were doing this already, on their own!
News from a French Xbox website logic-sunrise.com tells us the French retailer Micromania is now checking each Xbox360 with a Halo3 “DVD+R DL RW” (whatever that is lol) disc before buying it back from customers and putting it on the 2nd-hand market.
According to their source at Micromania this discs is coming from Microsoft. This is a quick test to see if the DVD FW has been flashed with a custom firmware – and would avoid the 2nd-hand buyer to be banned at a later time not knowing his FW was flashed. Of course you can still flash your DVD FW back to stock FW before selling it. Wouldn’t really detect already-banned consoles either, but we’ll assume they do a different check for that.
If other shops out there received a similar disc or got instructions from MS about how to detect flashed DVD FWs and banned consoles for 2nd-hand 360s, please comment.
Frash 0.02 — Flash On iPhone 4 and iPad
Based on Comex’s code, digitaldj compiled this for everyone to use — It’s flash for your iPhone 4 and iPad! There have been many different apps that ‘enable’ Flash on the iPhone but none of them worked out very well. This seems to have some potential, only time will tell how good it’ll get.
To install: (Note: You must have a jailbroken iPhone or iPad)
- Download the precompiled binary and SFTP it to /tmp on your iPhone/iPad
- SSH into your phone as root and type:
- Reboot your device (you shouldn’t need to)
dpkg -i /tmp/Frash-0.02.deb
NOTE: If you had Frash 0.01 installed on your iPad, remove it first (look for it in Cydia packages). Also, I haven’t yet tested this on iPad, but it certainly works on iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0.1.

Apple To Release Software Fix To Patch Jailbreak Exploit
CNet claims that Apple has developed a software security patch to fix the security hole in Safari. The same security hole used to enable the MobileSafari jailbreak (JailbreakMe 2.0 Star) a few days ago. The software update is yet to be released but it may be any day now.
On Wednesday an Apple spokeswoman said in a statement, “We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.”
Apple declined to say when the update would be pushed out.
Remember, jailbreaking your device is perfectly legal in the U.S. but Apple still has the right to fix security holes on their software and clearly, this is a security hole they’ll be fixing soon.

Well, it’s pretty damn clear from the images that the 4th generation iPod Touch will be featuring a FaceTime camera…and why wouldn’t it? It would definitely make a great feature to add to it. That, and a regular camera on the back, like the iPhone.
So, if the iPod Touch does, in fact, yet a FaceTime camera on the production model, how would you get in contact with the other person you’re trying to teach? Easy, you pair FaceTime with your email address.

FaceTime for iPad and iPod Touch To Be Linked to Email
Boy Genius Report claims to have gotten information on the new iOS 4.1 beta works with devices with front-facing cameras (FaceTime).
It’s actually pretty simple… Your Apple ID will be registered with your device/s, and that will allow other Apple devices to start a FaceTime call using your email address. Apple will also reportedly make use of push notifications to deliver these incoming FaceTime connection requests as we have been informed there is a push notification detector tied into the FaceTime frameworks in the new iPhone OS 4.1 beta.
The report doesn’t state how would one with multiple devices setup FaceTime with their email address. Would users have to have multiple email addresses for each device — That certainly would be a pain for others to keep track of — The easiest way, would probably be setup FaceTime with one email address for all devices and give the other user the option to “call” a specific device…say your iPad or iPod Touch or iPhone.

Jailbreak iPhone 4 and iOS via MobileSafari with JailbreakMe 2.0 Star
Update #2: After following Marc’s advise in the comments below, turning OFF Pop-up blocker on Safari helped my issue with using Jailbreakme 2.0 Star on my iPad WiFi+3G. I also did the following:
- Cleared cache and cookies in Settings -> Safari
- I also turned OFF “Block Pop-ups” Settings -> Safari as per Marc’s advise
- Rebooted
If nothing seems to be working for you. Try using http://jailbreakme.modmyi.com/ or http://www.jailbreakme.com/ — Exactly as shown there.

Update: JailbreakMe 2.0 Star crashes my iPad WiFi+3G running the latest iOS 3.2.1 — Not sure if its the case for everyone with an iPad but let us know your success or failure stories in the comments below!
iPhone Dev Team’s member, Comex, has released a stunning new jailbreak for, apparently, all iOS devices and it’s all performed via Mobile Safari with JailBreakMe 2.0 star — Yup, just like the old days.
To jailbreak with JailbreakMe:
- Head over to http://www.jailbreakme.com on your iOS device
- Slide to jailbreak on the screen
- Mobile Safari will download some stuff
- Then, the jailbreak process will begin
- Don’t panic, jailbreak process will take a while
- Once it’s done, you’ll get a confirmation notice and Cydia will now be on your home screen!
I can verify it works on an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0 — 9to5mac verified it worked an iPad and iPhone 4 running 4.0.1 — this will NOT work on iOS devices running iOS 4.1 beta.
Note: Please make sure you back up your stuff before you attempt this. You can never be too safe. Use strictly at your own risk — Sure it worked for me, but it can fail for you or someone else.

How To Make iOS 4 Faster On iPhone 3G
Yup, this is happening to almost everyone who took a leap of faith and upgraded their shiny iPhone 3G to Apple’s latest and greatest, iOS4 (Previously iPhone OS). Well, many if not everyone is experiencing extreme pain and slowness on the performance of their device.
Here’s a video comparing an iPhone 3G running iOS4 and an iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1.3 side-by-side.
The difference couldn’t be more clear.
iPhone Dev Team member, Comex, tweeted a link to ModMyI’s forums, where a user posted the following:
iPhone 3G apparently has trouble keeping up with indexing, ever since 3.x. Two days ago, I turned off Spotlight search (Settings-General-Home Button-Spotlight search-switch off all you don’t use) because I rarely, if ever, used it.
Up to this day, my poor old 3G with iOS is way snappier than it was before, and I wouldn’t hesitate to say it’s as snappy as with 3.1.3.
To disable Spotlight Searching:
- Launch Settings app
- Go to General
- Go to Spotlight Search
- Deselect indexing for all or as many items as possible
- Enjoy faster iOS4 on iPhone 3G!
I can’t vouch for it and say it does in fact work, but it can’t hurt for you to try it out.

U.S. Government Allows iPhone Jailbreaking
The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has issued a press release announcing the government’s policy changes that came at the request of the EFF and has posted the full document issued by the Copyright Office of the U.S. Library of Congress.
On balance, the Register concludes that when one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses. Case law and Congressional enactments reflect a judgment that interoperability is favored. The Register also finds that designating a class of works that would permit jailbreaking for purposes of interoperability will not adversely affect the market for or value of the copyrighted works to the copyright owner.
Also, the U.S. Library of Congress stated that copyright concerns can not be used to prohibit unlocking of mobile phones under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). However, carriers can continue to prevent unlocking in many circumstances and can also pursue cases against individuals by citing breach of contract under the carriers’ ToS (Terms of Service).
