Free Bumper Cases for All iPhone 4 Owners!
Well, it was bound to happen… Apple, Friday, held a press conference to discuss the iPhone 4 and obviously, it was mostly because the iPhone 4 signal strength issue that has made headline news all over the world. Overblown bad press, of course.
Steve Jobs announced Apple will be giving out free cases to every iPhone 4 owner. He stated that Apple can’t make enough cases to go to some 3 million owners, so Apple will offer a choice of different cases including the bumper case to customers and Apple will send them out free of charge. Also, users who already purchased a bumper case will receive a full refund. Users who purchased third-party cases will not be eligible for a refund.
Steve made it very clear that this problem is NOT unique to the iPhone 4. Every smartphone will experience some signal loss when grip in a certain manner — I have tried to replicate it with the iPhone 3G, and it happens. — Apple made a web page specifically to demonstrate various popular phones and how they also have signal loss when gripped.
In addition, Steve stated that if you still aren’t happy with your iPhone 4 before or after getting your free case, you may return it to Apple (undamaged, of course) for a full refund.
According to Jobs, only 0.55 percent of all iPhone customers have called the company’s AppleCare service with an antenna issue. (The company did not provide figures on the percentage of iPhone customers who sought out help from the Genius Bar service at Apple’s retail outlets.) Jobs also noted that the AT&T’s return rate for the iPhone 4 was 1.7 percent, compared to 6 percent for the iPhone 3GS during the same period a year ago. Jobs did concede that AT&T’s figures indicate the iPhone 4 drops more calls per 100 calls than the iPhone 3GS does, but he noted that the 3GS drops fewer than 1 call per 100.
Steve Jobs also addressed problems with the iPhone proximity sensor, which is being actively worked on to push a fix on the next software update (No time frame at this time)
You will be able to apply for your free iPhone 4 case late next week at Apple.com — Stay tuned!
